Stella CLARKE 'Bayside Reflections'
Bayside Artist Stella Clarke's recent paintings for Suburban focus on this locality. Stella’s work received the Pink Lady Bank of Queensland Art Show Prize in 2009 and featured on the ABC’s Art Nation this year.
‘The Bay is a beautiful and mercurial expanse of water, which draws us to its shores. In summer, the beaches are bright, crowded with Melbournians escaping the oppressive heat. The mirror-like surface, with its rocky rim, accentuates the sky, or pushed by wind into waves, exhilarates. Jetties circle and ornament the Bay. ‘Jetty’ comes from the French, meaning ‘thrown’. These patterned structures, thrown out between water and air, are a refreshing and magical place to be, and make a dramatic visual counterpoint. These works use intense washes of colour, and evoke the brilliance of refracted light. My aim is to capture the spirit of Bayside and its people’.
